The children spent the afternoon absorbed in the happy task of chopping and melting cubes of glycerin soap and pouring the liquid into molds. After about an hour's united effort, they had four cloudy, but decidedly lovely, bars of wiggly blue soap cooling on the counter, a tray of leftover shavings, perfect for molding by hand into civil war cannonballs, and a kitchen table freshly refinished in half an inch of clear blue glycerin:
Mom (fretfully): Hey, kids, take a look at the table. I can't get this stuff off.
Theresa (10): Oops. I'll get it, Mom.
Mom (unconsoled): This is really ground in. We'll need to scrape it all off, but it'll take forever.
Margaret (8): Don't worry, Mom. All we need to do is pour water over it, and it will dissolve.
Mom: Honey, water won't help--wax isn't water soluble.
Margaret (confused): But it's not wax, it's soap.
Mom: Oh, right, for a minute I thought you were making candles.
Now this sounds like an exchange at our house. :-)
What a lovely blog you've got going here! Bookmarked and now checked daily, I assure you ....
