My latest Long Island Catholic column is here in time for Divine Mercy Sunday.
The floodgates of mercy
Not very long ago, my teenage daughters and I went to see a Passion play at a local parish church. Stepping outside afterward, I could see that sixteen-year-old Allie’s cheeks were pale, and her mouth was stretched into a thin, little line.
“What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“I just embarrassed myself completely,” she whispered, half to me and half to her sister, Mary, who was walking alongside us. “How?” Mary wanted to know.
“Well,” Allie explained, blushing to recall the incident, “I was talking to one of the cast members and told her the show reminded me of ‘The Passion of the Christ.’”
“So?” Mary shrugged.
“So she said that she hated that movie and that it was anti-Semitic!” Allie winced to recall those last few words.

That is a beautiful article (as always) and I love Allie's wonderful insight. But what struck me was that she felt embarrassed by the exchange with a cast member, when infact it seemed quite rude how the person responded to her. I am sorry to think Allie should feel embarrassed herself, but inspired by how she turned that emotion into something wise and thoughtful and Christian.

Thank you for opening me up to a whole new level of understanding the Anima Christi, one of my favorite prayers.
When said after Mass, conditions applying, it is an indulgenced prayer, too.

Your daughter if gifted with a deeper understanding of things that are very uncommon to teenagers nowadays, you must be really proud of her!
